The heat sector in Ireland has currently fallen well short of it’s RES-H target of 12 per cent by 2020 and remains behind the EU average. The targets for electricity, RES-E and transport RES-T are thankfully performing above the EU average thanks mostly to on-shore wind and the biofuels obligation scheme. The Support Scheme for Renewable Heat (SSRH) which was launched in June 2019 has perhaps been the longest piece of policy legislation to be implemented by government to really kick start the decarbonisation of the commercial heat sector. The SSRH will incentivise the switch away from fossil oil and LPG for heat to biomass and heat pumps as a renewable alternative for businesses.
With this, Figure 1 below showcases some examples across different business sectors what fuel savings are possible, what the SSRH can generate as a potential extra revenue stream and what CO2 savings are also possible by making the switch. Each example is for illustrative purposes only. Figures are based on full biomass design, SSRH application, install, commission, fuel and maintenance.
