Ireland’s new Large Energy Users (LEUs) connection policy: What it means for the Irish energy sector
24th March 2026BnM – Powering Ireland’s sustainable future

For nearly a century, BnM has been deeply embedded in Irish life — supporting communities, driving regional development, and ensuring the country’s energy security. Today, as Ireland accelerates toward a low carbon future, BnM stands transformed: a commercial semi state enterprise and the country’s largest generator of renewable electricity, reshaping its legacy with a bold new strategic direction. The evolution of the brand to BnM reflects this future focus while honouring the company’s long-standing heritage as Bord na Móna.
BnM is building a future where secure, clean energy drives economic growth and safeguards the environment for generations to come. With 1GW of operational renewable capacity and a 5GW development pipeline spanning onshore and offshore wind, solar, battery storage, biomass and flexible generation, the company has delivered roughly one third of Ireland’s operational renewable capacity over the last five years. Its ambitions are equally significant: a planned €2.7 billion investment over the next decade to expand renewable energy infrastructure nationwide.
Delivering renewable energy
Renewable energy is now at the core of BnM’s strategic planning — informing project development, our integrated land use plan and investment decisions. This approach ensures that projects deliver value for the state and underpin economic growth and prosperity for communities and customers. By harnessing its extensive landbank and Ireland’s natural resources, the company is scaling renewable energy solutions at a critical moment for the national transition.
Progress continued in 2026 with key project milestones. Oweninny Wind Farm Phase Three achieved a successful RESS 5 outcome, reinforcing the strategic importance of what is now Ireland’s largest onshore wind site. The official launch of Timahoe North Solar Farm, developed with ESB, marked another landmark — both a major step in BnM’s solar strategy and a testament to the power of collaboration. This year will also see further development across eight onshore renewable projects under BnM’s joint venture with SSE, underscoring the company’s role in delivering large scale national infrastructure.
BnM’s Energy Park initiative, is a first-of-its-kind model in Ireland that co-locates renewable generation with large industrial demand. This approach eases pressure on the electricity grid while strengthening regional development in the Midlands. The company’s first partnership, announced in 2024 with AWS, demonstrates how renewable generation, battery storage, flexible demand, and secure grid connections can be brought together to support low carbon industrial growth. Several other suitable sites across the Midlands are now under active assessment, representing significant potential for inward investment, skilled green jobs, and enhanced national competitiveness.
Ireland’s leadership in renewable electricity — meeting nearly 40% of annual electricity demand has been shaped in no small part by BnM. Over the last decade, it has delivered more renewable infrastructure than any other market participant and now operates one of Ireland’s largest onshore wind portfolios. As electricity increasingly becomes the foundation of a modern, digital, and competitive economy, BnM’s role in securing Ireland’s energy future has never been more vital.
Looking ahead, BnM remains resolute in its commitment to Ireland’s energy security and expanding its renewable energy leadership. By aligning fully with national and EU climate objectives, the company is not only strengthening its own sector but contributing meaningfully to Ireland’s broader economic transformation.
At the heart of this progress is BnM’s growing workforce — diverse, highly skilled, and energised by a shared mission to deliver climate solutions that support Ireland’s social and economic wellbeing. Supported by an inclusive culture, employees are encouraged to engage, develop, and thrive, driving the success of the company.
As BnM continues its journey to enable a cleaner, more resilient and more prosperous Ireland, it stands ready — just as it has for almost a century — to deliver the energy solutions that will shape the nation’s next chapter.
