BnM: Powering Ireland’s net zero future

BNM is a commercial semi-state renewable energy company that has served Irish communities for nearly 90 years. We are building a future where secure, clean energy enables economic growth, while protecting our environment for generations to come.

As Bord na Móna, the company through its “Brown to Green” Strategy, transformed from Ireland’s largest national fossil fuel company to a leading provider of renewable energy transforming the way businesses are powered.

In the past year, BNM generated over 1.8 terawatt-hours (TWh) of renewable electricity, from a diverse portfolio of assets. The company has undertaken a series of major projects focused on wind, solar, and battery storage solutions. Through strategic partnerships, innovation, and continuous investment in green infrastructure and cutting-edge renewable technologies, BNM continues to drive progress in the energy sector and reduce national dependence on fossil fuels.

Our financial results for FY24 again demonstrate the strong momentum in BNM’s core renewable energy business with an operating profit of €106.7m which is up from €95.2m in the prior year, and a profit after tax of €102.2m. Continued strong financial performance is the enabler of investment and innovation which will secure both the future of the business and support Ireland’s clean energy capability as we chart a path to net zero emissions by 2050. Our 5GW renewable energy infrastructure pipeline is both an ambitious and a very tangible contribution to that goal

A key milestone during 2024 was the launch of the BNM – SSE Renewables strategic partnership to develop up to 800MW of onshore wind projects across the Midlands. This joint venture, one of the largest in Ireland’s history, represents an investment of over €1 billion and is expected to power approximately 450,000 homes while offsetting 500,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually. The partnership will oversee the development of multiple wind farms and play a key role in achieving national energy security.

To support continued progress, BNM integrates sustainability into its strategic planning processes. This involves conducting climate risk assessments, scenario analysis, and sustainability-linked investment decisions. We do this with care for our customers, communities and climate. BNM harnesses our landbank and nature’s resources to deliver sustainable energy systems at scale.

A key pillar of BNM’s future strategy is our Eco Energy Park initiative, a first-of-its-kind solution designed to support large industrial energy users in achieving low-carbon growth. The company has already secured Amazon Web Services (AWS) as the first partner for its Eco Energy Park, which will integrate wind, solar, and flexible power generation to decarbonise operations while strengthening Ireland’s energy security.
In 2025, BNM is exploring opportunities with other large energy users to expand the number of businesses and industries developing projects at the park. As Bord na Móna continues to develop these parks across its extensive landbank, it will provide a replicable model for industrial decarbonisation, fostering economic growth while ensuring the integration of renewable energy solutions at scale.

Looking ahead, BNM remains committed to pioneering new climate solutions and expanding its sustainability leadership. With continued investments in renewable energy, green hydrogen, and sustainable industrial partnerships, the company is well-positioned to drive Ireland’s energy transition and set a model for global best practices.

By aligning its strategy with national and EU climate objectives, BNM is not only leading its sector but also shaping the broader sustainable transformation of Ireland’s economy.

This success would not have been possible without BNM’s employees, a growing workforce who are energised by a shared mission to deliver climate solutions that support Ireland’s economic and social progress. It is an increasingly diverse workforce, supported by an inclusive culture where employees are encouraged to engage, develop, and thrive.
