Northern Ireland’s renewable opportunity

(L-R): RenewableNI Chair Steph Dunlop; Minister for the Economy Caoimhe Archibald MLA; and Mark Richardson, RenewableNI Director.

Northern Ireland is entering a decisive phase in its renewable electricity journey. There is a shared ambition for a cleaner, more secure, and more affordable energy system, supported by onshore wind, solar, storage, and offshore wind.

The prize extends beyond renewable generation; delivering energy resilience and benefits for communities and consumers.

At RenewableNI, we believe progress depends on sustained collaboration between industry, government, regulators, and communities. As Northern Ireland’s renewable electricity trade association, we bring together developers, generators, investors, advisers, and supply chain businesses, giving the sector a clear, credible voice.

Northern Ireland offers significant opportunity, but it is also a distinct market. It sits within the all-island Single Electricity Market while retaining its own political, legislative, planning, and regulatory arrangements. Grid constraints, consenting timelines, and routes to market all require locally grounded solutions, and for organisations entering or expanding here, understanding that landscape is essential.

There are positive signs. The progression of legislation to enable a long-term renewable electricity support framework is improving the investment outlook. The priority now is delivery, and that requires clear decisions, investable timelines, and coordinated action across institutions.
Through policy briefings, specialist working groups, direct political, and regulatory engagement, RenewableNI members gain insight into the decisions shaping the market, along with opportunities to influence them. They can share evidence, identify barriers early, and help develop solutions that benefit both the sector and consumers.

Our network brings operators, new entrants, and supply-chain businesses together to deliver projects. Our links with Wind Energy Ireland and RenewableUK broaden that reach across the island of Ireland and Great Britain.

No single organisation can resolve every challenge facing the energy transition, but an informed, coordinated industry can accelerate solutions. RenewableNI is the trusted forum where members collaborate on shared priorities, engage constructively with decision-makers, and communicate the economic, environmental, and social value of renewable electricity.

At the heart of this collective effort is our annual Smart Energy conference. The 2027 event will take place on Thursday 18 February 2027 at the Europa Hotel in Belfast and will bring together key players and decision-makers from across the industry.

Whether already active here or considering the market, membership offers insight, relationships, and a clearer view of the opportunities and risks. In both cases, members become part of the organisation working to turn renewable ambition into lasting delivery.

If your organisation wants to help shape Northern Ireland’s energy future, I invite you to join us.
