Scaling solar for Ireland’s energy transition: Sigenergy’s next phase in utility-scale innovation

Established in May 2022 and now approaching two years of operations in Ireland, Sigenergy’s rapid growth reflects the deep industry expertise behind the company. Its leadership and R&D teams bring decades of experience developing advanced solar and energy storage technologies.

In this short time, Sigenergy has become a market leader in residential and commercial solar and energy storage across Ireland and globally, recognised for innovation, quality, reliability, and strong local technical support.

As Ireland accelerates towards its renewable energy targets, the focus of the solar sector is shifting beyond simply installing more capacity. Developers and system operators are increasingly focused on delivering projects that operate efficiently within a rapidly evolving electricity grid, where integrating solar generation with energy storage and grid-supporting technologies will be essential for maintaining system flexibility and stability.

Building on its unparalleled success, Sigenergy is now entering the next phase of growth by expanding its technology platform into utility-scale solar developments, introducing a new generation of PV inverter solutions designed for large-scale projects.

At the centre of this platform is a 500kW utility-scale inverter operating at 1,000 V AC, complemented by 800 V platforms rated at 400kW and 370kW, providing flexible design options for large-scale solar developments.

These systems can be paired with Sigenergy’s integrated medium-voltage (MV) stations, enabling streamlined plant architecture while reducing overall balance-of-system costs.

On the DC side, the system supports flexible string configurations, helping optimise system performance under varying irradiance and operating conditions.

Energy yield optimisation is supported by a multi-MPPT architecture with two strings per MPPT, improving adaptability in complex project environments and changing weather conditions.

In large solar plants where terrain variation, array mismatch or partial shading can impact performance, this design enables more precise power tracking across strings. System modelling indicates this approach can increase overall energy production by approximately 1.5% compared with conventional inverter architectures.

Installation efficiency has also been prioritised. The inverter supports off-grid self-powered commissioning, allowing equipment setup without external power supply. For projects located in remote areas, this capability can significantly reduce reliance on diesel generators during construction, lowering both emissions and operating costs.

Reliability remains another key focus. The system incorporates multiple layers of protection including arc-fault detection, cable terminal temperature monitoring and reverse-polarity protection. The inverter is engineered for demanding environments with an IP66 enclosure rating, C5-H anti-corrosion protection and Type I surge protection, supporting long-term durability in utility-scale deployments.

Alongside hardware innovation, Sigenergy integrates AI-enabled operation and maintenance capabilities, enabling faster fault detection, improved plant performance and greater operational visibility across large solar sites.

Importantly, this utility PV platform represents only the first step in Sigenergy’s broader utility-scale roadmap, with the company’s expansion into utility-scale solar marking the next phase of growth: building on strong, bankable foundations while contributing to Ireland’s renewable energy transition and the development of a more resilient electricity grid.
